Being overweight is described as having an excessive amount of body weight that may come from muscle, bone, fat, or water. While obesity refers to having an excessive amount of body weight. So why is this important? Many people think of gaining weight as just adding some extra pounds. But the truth is that the ramifications of these extra pounds can be more than you expected. Here are some by-products of being overweight or obese: Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, liver disease, osteoarthritis, cancer, and stroke. I personally see the impact of the obesity and overweight population in Columbia, SC. Your body is like a furnace, if you don’t maintain it and feed it the right food and maintenance it will eventually shut down. So, having these “extra” pounds can lead so something more serious. Of course, you know that 5 or 10 extra pounds probably won’t cause this. But most of the time a couple of extra pounds usually balloons into more. A couple reasons could be linked to these causes. The first reason for the influx of overweight persons can be attributed to the food that we consume. Society is going away from natural sources of food, and instead are going toward processed or altered foods. The second reason is our lack of physical activity. We as humans were meant to move, and today, there are so many things that make physical activity obsolete. The third reason is linked to the current emotional state of a person. Let’s go into a little more detail with this point. Food has been used as a staple outlet for emotional stress, and most of the time, it is the sugary and fatty foods that people prefer. So when someone’s state changes, they want to feel better, and they temporarily do this by ingesting foods that make them feel better. But the 1st and 3rd reason are outside the scope of today’s blog.
